30 Brazilian clubs sign document in favour of regulating sportsbooks

(Brasilia).- On Tuesday 12th, the Supreme Court held the second day of a public hearing on the impact of online betting on the Brazilian public. André Sica, a partner at CSMV Advogados, presented the ‘Joint Declaration of Brazilian Clubs’ in support of regulating the segment in the country. The note, which defends the bill approved by Congress, was signed by 30 national football teams.
Brazilian clubs unite to regulate online betting
Among the clubs that signed the declaration are Cruzeiro, Fluminense, Botafogo, Palmeiras, Vasco da Gama, São Paulo, Corinthians, Atlético-MG, Internacional, Grêmio, Juventude, Cuiabá, Athletico-PR, Fortaleza, Bahia, Atlético-GO, Criciúma, Red Bull Bragantino, Vitória, América-MG, Ceará, Avaí, Ponte Preta, Guarani-SP, Joinville, Vila Nova-GO, Brusque, Paysandu, Hercílio Luz and Barra FC.
‘I think it was an extremely productive hearing. Football was able to play its part and show its point of view, because it understands that all regulation can be better, but a ban is never the way forward. Football was able to show great mobilising power. Through the space granted and the powers conferred by Fluminense, we managed to get 30 Brazilian football clubs on board and we issued a very strong statement, showing, in general terms, the position of the sector,’ explains André Sica, a partner at CSMV Advogados.
Impact of online betting: economic and mental health aspects
Convened by Justice Luiz Fux, rapporteur of the Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 7721, the public hearing addresses issues related to the economy and mental health in the sports betting sector. The discussion comes after a lawsuit filed by the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), and aims to clarify the impacts of online betting on the Brazilian public.
According to Fux, the aim of the event is to better understand the effects of betting on society. For the hearing, leading figures in national politics, major football clubs, companies in the betting sector and lawyers specialising in the field have been invited.
